Elena Jessup

A native New Yorker, I have been teaching Sanskrit to children and adults for over twenty-seven years in the United Kingdom and am one of the authors of the St James series of Sanskrit textbooks.  In 2008 I received a Masters’ degree in Sanskrit Literature from London University (SOAS) and am also a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. Sanskrit is the centre of my life and inspires me in many different ways. I hope that inspiration is fully conveyed to my students in whatever way is right for them.

I have taught for many different studios and organizations, such as Indaba Yoga Studio, Leo Cosendai, A Fine Balance Yoga Studio, The School of Ayurveda UK and Walking on Earth. Please get in touch if you would like me to teach or devise a programme at your organisation.

If you’d like to know a bit more about me, have a look at some of my interviews below.

What People Are Saying

"Elena is one of the most patient and encouraging teachers I have ever had the good fortune to work with. Completely removed from an egoistic teaching style, she is incredibly knowledgeable, encouraging and puts you at ease during every lesson. Despite the academic nature of the subject, I feel inspired and refreshed at the end of every session. I can't recommend her highly enough!"

— Alexandra, Sound Healer

“Elena teaches with passion and care for her students, making learning enjoyable and interesting.”

— Diti, Sanskrit Student at Leiden University
